Had first appointment with breast consultant on Friday 8th. I'd say we did not set off on a good footing. I imagine she saw me as complicated / out of the norm ( I arrived with a full set of diagnosis exams done abroad and difficult ( I'd say informed ;-) ) and I found her rigid ( am making allowances for the stress the NHS are under). She met several of my comments or requests with negative, off putting comments. Am just starting on the journey and don't want to delay it, but this feels important. She is a surgeon and most likely the person who will do my surgery. The MDT have not discussed my case yet - that is due to happen on wed 20th. Does anyone else have experience of changing consultants?
I stuck with a consultant for years that I felt was brusque and offhand, looking back I wish I hadn’t been in victim/patient mode and had changed early on, if that helps!
My first appointment with the oncology consultant did not go well either, she was also brusque with negative comments, blamed others in her team because a test hadn't been sent off, despite that this appointment was for the test results. Then tried to talk me out of having the test, said I no longer had cancer as it had been "cut out", asked me if my test came back high would I accept chemotherapy or not. I was stunned at her attitude and called my BCN immediately after to complain. I could have taken my complaint to PALS but did not want to deal with any problems further into my treatment. My future appointments were with different staff in oncology, I like to think just speaking to my BCN had the desired effect.
All other NHS staff have been amazing, it's a shame that it only takes one to instil doubt and upset when they really should know better.
Thanks Forestrambler, it does help! One of my musings had been whether I would wind up seeing other people along the way, but she is the consultant, who will most likely be around for 5 yrs..
