Mammograms ongoing

I’ve been told that I need to have a mammogram every year, but it was a long time from diagnosis in May 21 to lumpectomy to mastectomy. Does anyone know when that year would start? I haven’t heard anything about an appointment. What are other people’s experience?

  • I had my first one about a year after surgery. I had chemo, then surgery then radiotherapy. Operation was last Feb, radiotherapy finished at end of Apr. I had my first mammogram in Feb this year.

So for me, it was the surgery date they went on.

  • I have my first one in October exactly a year after diagnosis.good luck x

    1. Hi I asked the same question a few weeks ago!! I was diagnosed in May last year, 4 ops , chemo and just started radiotherapy yesterday. Bc nurse rang last week and I asked her she said usually 12 months after your surgery . However she was confused by the fact my most recent operation was in April this year and told me to expect an appointment next April. I advised her my first surgery was last july and oncologist had told me every year. I would of thought it would be less confusing to go by date of diagnosis. She checked the system but there was no appointment pending and said she would request one. I still havnt heard anything. I will wait till I finish radiotherapy and will ring and ask again. It just seems a bit lapse that none of the department's have taken the lead on putting this in place. Xxx
  • Hi Lfc74, I was in the same boat as you. I was diagnosed in April 2021 and my first surgery (lumpectomy) was in May 2021 but I had further surgery in January this year following 6 months chemo. After I finished radiotherapy in March I had an appointment with the oncologist and, after I specifically asked the question, they said that my first mammogram would be May this year, 12 months after my first surgery. The oncologist arranged the appointment for me, although delayed it by a few weeks to ensure that my breast had recovered from the radiotherapy. I did have to chase it up via my nurse though and I wonder if I hadn't asked the oncologist the question whether I'd still be waiting!

It seems as though different hospitals are doing different things when deciding the 'one year mammogram' start date so probably best to speak with your nurse to confirm the position x

  • Roughly a year after diagnosis - when the results from the initial biopsy came back. If you haven't heard I would ring your BCN to chase it up.

  • Yes, just had mine, a year after diagnosis x

  • Thank you, I think since I’ve passed 1 year from both diagnosis and first surgery it seems from everyone’s replies that I should have heard something by now. I’ll take your advice and talk to the bc nurse.

  • Had mine too 1 year give or take a month due to delays. I did chase up and got a cancellation. Had it today.

  • Yes, I’m going to chase it up too, once I’m back from holiday.Upside down Good luck with your result. X

  • Have to wait 3 weeks! But will try not to worry too much x
