Rib pain after completion of radiotherapy

Hi,

I had a bi lateral lumpectomy in January.

I finished a course of 20 sessions of radiotherapy at the end of April. The soreness, itching etc settled down over a few weeks, but now I have this pain in my ribs at the side and under one breast. It feels like I am bruised. Is this part of the radiotherapy affects or something more sinister?

I am having checks to see whether I have a faulty BRCA gene so obviously I am imagining the worst that the cancer is still there and taking hold.

  • I think it’s normal. I’ve not had radiotherapy yet but I have seen similar posts from others who have. X

  • I haven’t started my radiotherapy yet but the consultant told me that in some cases the radiotherapy can actually break a rib! Not alarming at all but better than thinking it’s the cancer back, best get it checked out though. Good luck.

  • Hi

I start my radio therapy 27th so I will be asking if could effect my ribs too.
it is scary when you think it’s helping you in one way and could be causing issues in another way.  But I have read through the pages that it can cause different side effects. My mum had hers 5 years ago 20 sessions and she  was fine through it Barr a slight burning and tightness at the end but went after a few weeks

  • Hi

Yes you can get rib pain from radiotherapy. In order to treat all of your breast the ribs do get some dose. I finished my RT Sept 21 and got the same bruised feeling for a few months. It has gone now though.

If you are worried please ring your breast care nurse and get it checked out to put your mind at rest.
