Struggling to decide

Was due to go in today for a single mastectomy and expanding implant reconstruction. Until…..I was called in 2 days ago to find out that there was a minimal trace of cancer in the 2 nodes removed in the sentinel biopsy. So now the pathologist is taking more time to ‘test’ further. So surgery moved to 16th!

I know i need to wait for the results but I’ve been told to think whether to go ahead with the reconstruction if they need to do a full clearance as well. Or to delay and wait til later down the line.

Welcome any advice.

It’s all so confusing, frustrating and upsetting x

  • Hi NicMichelle

Sorry to hear that there was a trace of cancer in your lymph and that your operation has put back because of it.  While I don't have any advice for you as I only had a lumpectomy I thought I'd reply to you as you haven't had any answers yet.  Hopefully someone will be along soon to give you some advice.

Wishing you the best of luck with your operation whatever you decide to do.

    Best wishes

  • Hard to offer an opinion without being familiar with your medical records, but from what you said here, I would definitely wait with the reconstruction until later. Your surgeon and oncologist should be able to explain why this would be the better option, and while it is not a bad thing they are giving you a choice, I would very much recommend to make sure that any decision you make is based on full information. Then, if you decide to go for immediate reconstruction (which is a valid choice regardless of mine or anyone else's opinion) you would be doing so knowing in advance the possible paths this may lead into.
