Reconstruction

Can anyone give me any feedback please, good or bad on not having reconstruction after a single mastectomy, I had expander fitted after the mastectomy and it’s not working as planned, due to my skin being too thin,( I had radiotherapy years ago)  I’ve been offered fat grafts to see if that helps, but I don’t know if I want more operations than necessary and would I be better having it all removed, my doctor said she’s not sure how many ops I would need and wether the fat graft  would  work anyway. So confused as what to do.

  • H Daisy May T     I had a single  mastectomy  back in 2004. Its so hard to decide what to do next, and its such a big decision to make.I decided not to have any further surgeries because i did not want to keep going into hospital all the time.I just wanted to get on with my life and enjoy it. Now i had large breasts so wearing a prosthesis ( chicken fillet ) was uncomfortable as they were large and heavy but they have now come on in leaps and bounds they are much lighter. So 1 year after my fist mastectomy i had the other breast removed to even myself up a bit so to speak Now this has been for me the best decision i could of made. I know its not for everyone but it works for me. A friend of mine wears 1 prosthesis and is very happy with it, she could not have reconstruction due to skin problems too, she also had the same thoughts as me she didn,t want the disappointment of it not working and having to keep going back for treatment that could take months and might be for nothing. I think its such an individual choice you have to ask yourself what you are prepared to go through to make you happier. Maybe talk to your family and friends first. I wish you all the best xx

  • Hello Wino

I was interested to read your post regarding prostheses. I too had very large breasts (38H/J). The operation was due when covid kicked in and I had to wait. When I did get the operation I insisted on having a double mastectomy (reconstruction was not given as an option)and I am glad I did get the double. I do, however,  find the prostheses heavy and cumbersome and am wondering what make yours are. I also hate the way my stomach now protrudes, I joke I have had a bust drop!! Either laugh or cry!

    Thanks

  • Thanks for your reply, I’ve certainly got a lot to think about. I didn’t need any other treatment after the mastectomy, just taking Anastrozole , but I seem to be spending a lot of time at the hospital deciding what to do next, when I just want to get on with my life. Hey Ho that’s life. X

  • Hello group,

I would like to know an opinion about breast reconstaction with implants or fat. How it was after the operation, how you adapted to the new breast, how long has the recovery?  Can you work? Any information is welcome.

    Thanks
