Delaying reconstruction

Any advice on delaying reconstruction. Due a mastectomy next week, offered dorsal flap with implant as other breast DD cup..but had radiation 21 years ago on that breast for previous tumour & as I also suffer from keloid scarring I'm concerned about outcome, so veering on the side of no reconstruction just get on with follow up treatment.

Are you having radiotherapy this time?

Mine is delayed as I'll be having radiotherapy after the chemo and our nhs trust prefers to do reconstruction after the radiotherapy to minimise any damage to the reconstruction and finished look?

Could you perhaps have a chat with a member of the team? They might be able to advise. Also have you looked into the possiblity of silicone dressings which can help minimise scarring and I'm sure I read can help with keloid ones.

  • Hi thanks for reply. No cannot have radiation twice on same breast I've 21 years of lymphodema and peripheral neuropathy on account of it and wide excision surgery done to treat first breast cancer.

Silicone dressings work for hypertropic scarring not keloids - I have had a lifetime experience - injections post surgery do relieve itch, swelling, redness and pain but cosmetically still left with ugly scars. Have discussed with BC team but keloids are unusual so it is a bit of an unknown. Yes radiation alters skin so reconstruction delayed usually.

    Good luck with your treatment.
