Hi everyone

I’m a little bit confused about when some people are saying they are waiting for results after mastectomy / lumpectomy , what results ?
Also , is everyone sent for a CT scan or is it only when they can see nodes are infected in the original diagnosis before any treatment is started  ?

hope this makes sense , my head is all over the place

  • Hi there.  Once op is over, the lump and any lymph nodes removed are tested to check whether everything has been removed and that there is no spread to lymph nodes. Most of us seem to see surgeon around 2 weeks after op to chat about results and discuss next course of action, if needed. Hope this helps

  • Hello, I can only give my experience which was that following a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy, I had to wait whilst the lab checked they had got what they call clear margins from the lumpectomy and whether any cancer cells had got to my lymph nodes. So, my understanding was that even though they operate to remove the cancer, they also check in a lab to see whether they have got everything. Hope that helps, the waiting was pretty awful, but got there eventually.

I think different NHS trusts do it differently.

Where I am, If I had more than 4 lymph nodes affected then I would have had a CT scan.

Also plans can change following results too. Xx

  • Ah yeah that’s probably why I was a bit confused

my NHS trust has same policy to yours I think
