Mastectomy recommended post pathology

Hi had a WLE & Licap mid January 22. I had some complications (see other posts) but have just been given pathology results. I had clear margins on all but one side of the lumpectomy and now they are recommending masectomy. They originally estimated 6cm DCIS which came out at 5.5cm but they found an additional 3cm. Also a small 3mm cancer. I’m struggling to reconcile masectomy yet as I’m only 3 weeks in recovery from the first op. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Am wondering if I can do this with radiotherapy and haven’t had any other CT, PET or ultra sounds on that side (now recommending node biopsy as well). Any experiences welcome. Thank you. Xx

  • While I would listen to the consultant, you are under no obligation to accept their recommendation. It may be best to ask the oncologist why they are recommending a mastectomy over other options, such as the one you are thinking of. Their explanation could either persuade you to go along with what they are suggesting, or it could strengthen your resolve in seeking other options, but either way, you would know more.

If you choose to do that, do not accept answers that are not informative, such as, "because I think that option would be better for you," and ask again, "why is that?" until you get a full, informative answer.

Big hugs. I think when there are many areas found I think they prefer to do a mastectomy to make sure they have got it all. Were they all the same type - dcis?

I had a mastectomy in January as they had found 3 lumps at biopsy stage. Turned out post mastectomy there were in fact 7 lumps!

Can you chat with your bcn and find out more? Xx
