Hi,

First post! Just finished chemo (2 types) and wandered how quickly my immune system recovers?

Am hoping to meet up with family but wanted to be safe. Am sure my consultant mentioned 3-4 weeks but chemo brain make me question that.

Thanks

  • Hi I was told three months for chemo to be out of system but with regards immune system not sure how long . I went straight onto Herceptin . Also covid arrived so was shielded anyway . I would ask your onco they might want a blood test then they can tell you how you doing .
We are all different but personally I’d give it 3/4 weeks but take any  precautions you feel you need to feel safe .

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • I think it takes 3 to 4 weeks for your bloods to recover but many months to a year or so for your immune system to fully recover.

I asked my oncologist this and they said that it is very difficult to measure your whole immune response as it is so complicated.

I am a year on from chemo and still feel like my immune system is not what it was. I have had 2 infections that needed antibiotics in the past 4 months and I think I had maybe 3 or 4 instances of taking antibiotics in my whole life before that and I'm mid-40s. So something definitely not right yet.

However, in terms of seeing immediate family and friends, your neutrophils will have recovered again in a few weeks, though f your bloods were like mine then they got worse and worse as I went through chemo so that by my last cycle, I was only just able to have the chemo.

I would just ask people to take lateral flow tests before seeing you and mention if they are feeling at all unwell, not just from covid but anything else too. You have to look after yourself just now but if seeing people is also important then just take some precautions.
