Post surgery bras

Can I ask the magic question? I’ve been genuinely confused over the post surgery bra piece. I was invited to the NHS BCN pre talk for surgery and shown a bra and given a catalogue.

I thought the surgeon or BCN checked you for size…but that didn’t happen so I sized myself and thought that I had to buy one, so I went for a generic size that covered two sizes and no specific cup (was a bit unsure re sizing myself and on limited timescales). I also bought a vest that some people said they wore for the first two weeks before even getting into the bras.

Roll onto the op, surgeon puts me in bra I’ve bought. Ok, private ward then gives me one size bigger than my usual size in a different make. NHS BCN didn’t agree with what private ward gave out and then named a completely different brand that hadn’t come up before. Confusingly afterwards I was told NHS BCNs also worked on private ward.

Was told to keep bra on for 2 weeks until first consult, at interim consult due to pain and swelling the bra didn’t fit as well so I was advised to go into vest. I’m still not sure now whether I should have started one to two sizes bigger than I was and worked down to my normal size over time.
Travelling in the car was torture without any support.

Anyone had same experience or sussed what you are actually meant to do?

  • Hi, like you, I could not get my head around the unsized / one size bras (I a G cup) so I bought an M&S post surgery bra in my regular size and it was fine. I wore it at night for the first coupler of weeks end even now (months on) wear a crop top bra thing, light support but really good at night. Hope this helps

  • Hi the best after surgery bra I found is from M&S and got the size I always was. I ordered them on line and they were delivered 2/3 days later. Yes they do up at the back but are very supportive.

I use different ones to sleep in that are softer and as my husband calls them 'front loading' on other words they do up at the front. If you need some support at night best tops are also very good. But put them on inside out so the seams don't rub on your tender skin /areas.

If you travel anywhere try using a pillow /cushion under your arm it does help but yes I did find travelling in a car very painful as well.

    Hope this is helpful.

  • Should read vest tops not best tops. JoyJoy
