Painful breast swelling

Hi, I don't know if anyone can offer any remedy relief advice.  It's now two weeks since I've had my second wide local excision surgery in my left breast.  The excision is healing well but my breast is quite swollen and painful.  I saw the breast care nurse last Wednesday and she says I have fluid in my breast and suggested if it doesn't get any better to have fluid syringed.  Has anyone else had this done and if so, did it help?  I'm taking paracetamols every 4 hours but I don't think it's helping at all.  If I used a cold compress would that help?  My breast feels so tender to touch.  I had my 2nd op just 4 weeks after my 1st op and my breast was only just feeling better when I had to have my second surgery.   I'm going back to hospital on Thursday to see the surgeon to get results from my 2nd op, I'm hoping and praying that they have removed all the cells as I don't think I can go through another surgery.  Any advice to help with pain will be very grateful.  Thanks x

  • Hi, this sounds painful, so sorry to hear that. A fluid build up, often called a seroma, is quite common and I certainly  had a lot of swelling and discomfort after my lumpectomy. One of the things I was told to watch for is an infection, so it might be worth checking this out. You can give the Macmillan team a call or use the “Ask a Nurse” group here - Link to ask a nurse

I hope this pain eases soon for you and your recovery gets back on track.

  • Hi

I had a painful seroma following my WLE and had it drained by syringe 3 times. The first time they took 920ml from it, subsequently it was around 300ml each time. On my 4th visit my surgeon reopened the wound slightly which allowed it to continuously drain and heal.
Is your breast red or warm to the touch? Do you feel unwell, you may have an infection. Please try and speak to your breast care nurse tomorrow.
    Hope you  feel better soon

  • I found heat helped with the pain so I used a hot compress.
