Has anyone has a partial response from chemo? Chemo is working on the one lump but not shrunk the other?

  • Hi Youhavegotthis

I had a partial response to chemo, while the cancer was gone in my breast I still had some cancer in my lymph nodes.

  • If you don't mind me asking did this change anything with surgery or treatment after the op?

  • I was put on a chemo tablets for six months.

  • I had a partial response from chemo, which just meant there were still active cancer cells rather than them all being killed off (a full pathological response).

They told me before my operation that if it was a partial response I would be on chemo pills for 6 months - this is fairly new, new treatments come out all the time, and all treatment is tailored to your specific case.

However, pathology results from my operation downgraded me from grade 2 aggression (from biopsy) to grade 1, and no lymph node involvement, so they decided I didn't need further chemo. I had radiotherapy after that and now 5 years of hormone therapy.

How far through chemo are you? and will you be switching drugs?

  • Thats really good news. It's always nerve wracking when they say that a tumour hasn't shrunk yet but maybe it might not be as aggressive as I can feel it working well maybe that's just my head telling me it is! So I have just had my 5th chemo I am now on the herceptin part with chemo and herceptin. My last chemo is the 29th Dec and they didn't want to change my chemo and are still planning going ahead with the mastectomy 4 weeks after chemo. I just pray that these 2 extra cycles start doing their job. The chemo has worked on my lymph nodes just not the breast lumps must be difficult ones!! I hope you're keeping well x
