Hi I had a mastectomy five weeks ago (Monday gone) and just wondering how long it should take before you have full movement in your arm. I still can't fully stretch my arm up as it pulls.  It is getting better as I have a marker (the door hinge) to see how high I can go when doing my wall exercises   but my right arm still can't go as high as my left. Thanks

  • This can differ vastly from person to person. Good that it is getting better, but if you are concerned at all about it, perhaps you could ask to see a physio so that you can get assessed and helped as needed.

If I was you I would get on to doctor or breast nurse and get some specialist physiotherapy . The problem you seem to have is cording and physio will ping them off .  It's best done as soon as possible it won't be painful and mobility will return very quickly, some mobility will return immediately.

  • What does “pinging” involve please

Popping off the cords under the skin that are stuck to the underside of the skin when massaged off they make a popping or pinging sound .  They should not be stuck to your skin as it stops free movement of your arm .
