Picc line tomorrow

Hello folks , hope everyone is ok .  I am having my picc line put in tomorrow .  Whilst I have now reconciled myself that this is the best option for me, I am now starting to think about the actual insertion.  Now the BCN assures me it doesn’t hurt and they will put in a local anaesthetic, but they said that when I had a biopsy and it hurt like hell.    Does anyone have any experience of having them put it, that they would be happy to share.   I am a big baby and starting to worry about this now.  Thanks in advance xxx

  • Good luck today, hope everything goes ok for you x

  • Thanks Mel . It’s in now but I am not very happy as they have said I can’t knit and I know I’m the grand scheme of things it seems such a small thing .  It is massive for me as I used knitting therapeutically -and the thought of not being able to distract myself for the next 6 months fills me with horror .  I will end up in tears all the time as can’t switch my head off . It seems so silly saying this but I am going to lose so much through this treatment now this .

hope you are ok and sorry to sound so negative . Will see what they say tomorrow for the first chemo session . Xx

  • That’s nuts and never heard that before, just checked with some other chemo friends and they said they weren’t told that either, definitely get a second opinion on that and I’ll also ask at chemo tomorrow, you can do exercise, have sex and take part in normal activities. All I was told was not lifting over 5lb, don’t lift heavy things above my head, no contact sports or vigorous activity and avoid vacuuming. Oh and don’t get it wet, I seriously can not think of a single reason why you couldn’t knit especially given how you feel it would benefit your mental health. As long as you have a cover and a long sleeve top maybe so you couldn’t get the needle hooked under it by accident maybe? X

  • I’ve just heard back from a friend of mine who is a senior haematology nurse for many years at a London hospital, she delivers chemo for patients usually with leukaemias often via a picc obviously. She has also never heard that you can’t knit, she can’t think of a possible reason why you shouldn’t knit. I’ve looked on the internet too and can’t find any reason or mention of this and I’ve double checked the leaflet that came with my picc and nothing. I’ll ask the nurse tomorrow as well but I think this is incredibly strange and you should ask again and ask why it’s a risk given all the things you can do that seem far more dangerous x

  • Hi I am a lead vascular access practitioner, I insert piccs for a living I can say with certainty that knitting isn’t contraindicated with a picc line in fact it would be beneficial is reducing risk of thrombosis

  • I did think they must be joking but apparently it’s the repeating action of the muscle that could cause the line to twist .  I am going to ask again tomorrow as this is massive for me . Seems such a small thing when I say it out loud but have had a horrible evening stuck on my own head xx

  • Thankyou so much that is such a relief .   Tomorrow the chemo starts and just need to have a better day tomorrow xx

  • Wishing you so much good luck for tomorrow. Why not ask if you can do crochet ? If you knitted for a short time, say in small timed sessions, with a tea break - surely that would be OK ? Sometimes we are told the most stupid things. My husband was told off for moving a chair at the breast clinic - makes everyone upset. I'd be inclined not to ask in future. I said I was going to a dinner and there was merry hell in Radiotherapy. Well seeing its us that are having to suffer with cancer, I don't see what's so wrong with eating dinner and I don't see what's wrong with having a knit !!!! We don't go round telling all the nurses having a quiet fag outside the hospital it's unhealthy do we ???

  • Thank you for posting, great to get a professional view, really nice to have your help x

  • Can't be worse....ask them tomorrow if crochet is OK ? Small sessions with breaks ?
