EC, Cold Cap and Hair Loss

I had my first EC chemo last Saturday.  On Friday I had my PICC line fitted and the nurse was very (almost brutally) dismissive of the benefits of the cold cap with EC. She kind of said - 'oh you'll loose your hair anyway so it's not worth bothering with, but I can't tell you not to have a go'.  I went ahead and had the cold cap anyway - it wasn't the most fun experience in the world, but tolerable

So my question is - what is your experience with EC/cool cap? Is it worth carrying on?

Many thanks

  • I was told the same thing - you'll lose it eventually anyway, or most of it, with EC and docetaxel. For me, the decision was easy as I suffer from migraines and cold cap can bring them on. But I also had very long hair so if I lost loads of it anyway even with cold cap, then I would have had to have cut it short once it started growing back again, otherwise you'd end up with some of your hair very long and the rest very short! Short hair would have been a huge change for me anyway, so I just shaved it off and felt more in control that way.

I honestly found it the least bothersome of all side effects Your hair grows back and it's not painful when it falls out (not for me anyway with a shaved head). It was the one thing I really felt in control of and did on my terms. All other side effects come at you and you don't know what you're going to get.

I know your question was to people who have tried the cold cap, but just wanted to offer some support for losing your hair - it's not as bad as you think!

  • I've heard a lot of people say the nurses often say this because it adds to their workload, I'm not sure how true this is.

I had my first EC on the 1st October and decided not to cold cap, just couldn't be bothered with the extra time spent either side of the chemo and the fact that many peoples hair thins anyway. But it's a personal choice.

Im 15 days on and my hair is still holding on, no sign of anything yet.
