i am recently diagnosed and getting a treatment plan for a mastectomy and implant. I’ve been told the implant can be placed in front of the muscle or behind it. Does anyone have experience of either?  Any info on the pros and cons of each would be helpful for me.
thank you

Behind the muscle gives a much more natural effect, the implant is more cushioned and many plastic surgeons will not put implants above the muscle if they can possibly avoid it. But you need to talk to your plastic surgeon about your individual situation

Thank you. I will have that conversation.

  • Hi

I was told that in front of the muscle is what is mostly done now using the ADM mesh for support so it binds to the skin with Allergan silicone implants .

My PS also said over muscle prevents animation  (sometimes if it is under the muscle if you use the muscle then the implant can move slightly as such or as they said animate).

I would be interested to hear what your experience is like. I am having this op (direct to implant recon) following mx next week (bilateral) so fingers crossed it goes well.

Hi, I’m having risk reducing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction with implants. I don’t know whether to go with behind or in front of muscle. What did you go for? Thanks
