Pre-op assessment but no surgery date?

I'm waiting for a bilateral mastectomy and have just received a letter for my pre op in two weeks time but no mention of a date for surgery. How long do you normally wait?

  • Hi I think I had my surgery date about 2 weeks after my pre-op, so my surgery was about 4 weeks after pre-op, they do your bloods at pre-op so they’d have to have them back before giving a date for surgery.

  • Hello GW1969 I think the wait times vary from hospital to hospital. I received my surgery date first, and had the pre op on the Friday before the surgery, which was on the following Monday. The nurse said that they don't want to leave too long a gap between the pre op and surgery as there would be a risk that the blood, urine, covid etc test results could have changed. Maybe give your breast care nurse a call to see what the wait times are like at your hospital? Hope your surgery goes well x

  • Thanks my breast care nurse is chasing the surgeon. I have told work I won't be in from next week as I work in a school with SEN children and we have a positive covid case. Feel a bit guilty that I will be off without a date for surgery.

    Hi  GW 1969

Not long really I had a bilateral mastectomy in August  and it took 7 1/2 hours so you will be the only major surgery that day so its just a case of the surgeon setting aside almost whole day for you . Take care

  • I only got booked in for pre-op when I had my surgery date (which was 4 weeks after chemo), so it must be different in different places. pre-op was on a Monday, op on the Wednesday I also got my covid test at pre-op

Yes different in different areas . I had pre tests and Covid 3 days before surgery .  Sometimes if you ring surgeons secretary you can get more up to date information best wishes GW1969
