Hi, I am having a single mastectomy on the 16th of June. The other breast will be removed at a later date. I just wondered if there were any ladies here who could offer me any tips or advice? Anything which helped whilst in hospital or you wish you had known before etc. I have chosen to not have any reconstruction. Thank you.

Hi That's good. My drain was a pain and I had to change it twice! Very good luck with your op; I am two weeks post op and doing fine. A bit of savlon on the scar helps me when the dressings are removed. xx

My bilateral mastectomy is scheduled the 28th of this month.  I think I have all I need presurgery, but still looking for advice mostly due to nerves.

    Thanks!

Hi MAL70. Thank you for your message. I’m glad to hear you felt well after yours. Sending you a massive hug! Savlon is a good tip, I have heaps of nappy cream too which I hear is good. My surgery went really well, I actually felt pretty great when I woke up, maybe the morphine had something to do with it ha ha but I was up and about, eating and drinking in no time. Felt really good! I was able to come home about 4 hours after which is amazing! Still feel okay now. Bit sore but nothing bad at all, I can’t sleep but I think that’s adrenaline from such an emotional day. I can sleep whenever I need to though so that’s fine. So far so good xxx

Hi Adira, sorry to hear you’re going through this too. Try not to worry too much, I know that’s far easier said than done and I did worry too. My surgery went so well today. I only had the one breast removed but will be having the other at a later date. On the whole though I feel fine. If anything the waiting beforehand at the hospital was the worst part, I was in a waiting room from 7:30 until 1 when I was taken down. Very hot and uncomfortable. The surgery itself obviously felt like a blink of an eye because of the anaesthesia. I felt great when I was woken up, I did ask for some morphine as I was feeling a bit of pain on my side but that soon passed. I was up and about, eating and drinking quickly, so I was allowed home about 4 hours after surgery. I just feel quite stiff at the minute but comfortable. I’m just on paracetamol now. My tip for afterwards would be to drink a lot of water (before too) which some ladies here suggested and that helped. Also try and eat when you can to settle your tummy. Just something I found helped. I’ve accepted that I’m going to have to take it easy now at home (not one to usually do that) but I feel like I really need to listen and do as I’m told ha ha. I will start my exercises tomorrow. I have a drain too which is okay, I think it will take some getting used to, I keep going to take my drain bag off my shoulder thinking it’s my handbag ha ha. I haven’t managed to look at the site yet as I am heavily bandaged and have a support bra on which I’ve been told to leave on now until I am checked again a week today at the hospital. Sorry for babbling on! I hope this helps with your anxiety and if you have any questions please just ask in the thread. Lots of lovely ladies here have helped me heaps and I would be happy to answer anything too. We are all in this together. Take care and try to focus on the end goal, you’ll be one step closer to being better xx

  • Been thinking about you loads. So glad your operation went well. Remember to rest and do you exercises. Really feel it helped me to heal.

  • So glad your op went OK. Your very positive description is just as it was for me. A bit up and down as far as I'm concerned. Two steps forwards, one backwards. Had a haematoma and another unexpected op last Friday. Doing my exercises and check up tomorrow.

  • Glad all went well:-) xx

  • I had my mastectomy yesterday:-) went to theatre at 10.30 and was home by 6.30pm with no drains.  Felt fine yesterday though this morning feel a bit like I've been hit by a bus! Hope when I take compression bandage off later that will help..

B32 hope you still doing good xx

Hi Merlin1664, oh I’m so glad your operation went well and you were also home the same day! Fab you don’t have a drain. Mine was removed after 8 days. I feel great. Had my wound review and really happy with how it’s healing. Had a real good look too and it’s lovely and neat. I feel fine in myself, still more tired than usual but not taking any painkillers or anything. Hope you heal and feel as well as I do. I have to wear the compression bra for 4 weeks total which is annoying but necessary. I will be glad when I can take it off! Have you started the exercises? I’m just in limbo now, I get my results on the 5th July, so then I will know if I need any further treatment xx
