I can't help but notice how different my support is from when my husband had lung cancer.  There are several charities and of course this month means pink seems everywhere.

It was very different the reaction he got from others, such as blaming him.

It's such a shame that there seems to be a hierarchy around whether someone is deserving help.

  • Hi

I am glad you are feeling well supported and am sorry it wasn’t the same for your husband. Some cancers seem better researched and funded than others, I hope we reach a point where there are good resources available for all cancers

  • Hi

Did your husband smoke?  I smoked and was diagnosed with breast cancer 9 years ago.  I only gave up smoking after 46 years, last year!  My oncologist reacted badly to me one time when I asked a question about the tablets I was being told to take for 5 years and I got told "it would be more to the point if you gave up smoking", rather than answering my question.

I can assume that if I'd been diagnosed with lung cancer, I would have been 'blamed' for getting it as it's often linked to smoking.  I kept telling myself every cigarette I smoked after my diagnosis, not to -  as I didn't want any other cancer, but it didn't help.  Plus, when I started smoking, everyone used to smoke and as kids there were vending machines on the side of pubs, so it was easy to get them.  Things are so different now, but once hooked, you're hooked!

If someone blames someone else for being ill - implied or verbally, then it is so wrong, isn't it?

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer, which I guess is why there is so much support and more charities dedicated to breast cancer.  It would be better if all cancers had the same amount of support but I guess it's based on the number of people utitlising the services.

I hope you are doing well with your treatment as it sounds as if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and it's great to hear that you feel supported.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley

  • He had been a smoker as people pointed out ironically but had stopped a few years before. Lung cancer is the biggest killer still, partly due to ignorance.
