Zoledronic Acid Fear

Hi

I m due to start Zoledronic Acid infusion every 6 months for 3 years alongside Kadcyla chemo every 3 weeks which I've already started for HER2+ breast cancer.

I've had little to no side effects from kadcyla but I'm worried about the short and long term side effects of zoledronic acid as It sits in the bones for years after treatment and frankly I'm scared!

I've also been told the first one could cause flu like symptoms but I'm reading a lot about severe pain, fracture risks and jae (albeit rare) necrosis. Once ZA is in your body it can't be reversed. Do the benefits outweigh the side effects and risks?

My initial chemo treatment was horrendous and someone said this is worse than chemo...!!

I'm probably over thinking it but I'm hesitating about going ahead as the fear has gripped me!

Any advice from those already going through it would be welcome.

  • I had horrible side effects after my first infusion. Shaking, feverish, generally feeling awful for about three days. If I’d known what to expect it wouldn’t have been so bad.

I’ve now had four sessions and each time the side effects have lessened.

My view (so far) is that the side effects of my treatment package aimed at reducing the risk of cancer is better than the alternative.

  • I had a horrible side effects after my first infusion ( flu like symptoms). These side effects lessened as I continued to have it. I have had my last one last month after 3years of having it.

For me the benefits outweigh the side effects. I’m doing great now, I don’t know what the future holds, I’m trying to stay positive.

  • I have finished all 6 of my infusions. I had slight flu like symptoms for a day after the first one and no side effects at all with the rest. Make sure you have any dental treatment beforehand, my dentist recommended a gum and enamel strengthening toothpaste which I still use. I definitely think the protection to the bones is really worth it. Hope that helps.

  • I have just finished my infusions. 1st was fever and flu symptoms  get better with each infusion .

Drink plenty of water before your infusion as that really helped

  • Hi, I had flu like symptoms the day after my first infusion, but for less than 12 hours and I have had zero side effects from the infusions since. I will have my final, 10th, one in a few weeks. Hope this reassures you. Best wishes

  • Thank you SEE, I've been warmed about the side effects but told it's generally the first infusion. Helpful to know that it might occur after the others. Thank you for sharing and I hope your side effects continue to ease.

  • Thanks for the heads up on the water. I've heard paracetamol before each infusion helps too, so I'll give that a go. Anything to help reduce the effects Blush

  • That sounds a more positive response, but I guess everyone is different. Appreciate the reassurance, I'm not looking forward to it but when your choices are limited you have to go with the flow. My firsFingers crossedt one is tomorrow, Fingers crossed

  • Thank you, yes teeth checked. I'll check out the enamel strengthening toothpaste, every little helps. I'm glad to hear your experience wasn't too bad. I'm coming to terms with the necessity of the treatment as much as I don't want it I agree that it's better than the alternative.
