Lung problems after radiotherapy

Hi,

I finished treatment a couple of months ago (mastectomy, chemo and radio) after I finished radiotherapy I had a few weeks where I found it difficult to breathe. I was sent to A&E where they did tests, an ECG and an xray but found no cause. The radiotherapy nurse told me it wasn’t a side effect but after researching online and reading the macmillan advice book it mentions fibrosis as a side effect. I have since had to cough up a sort of flegm most mornings and this evening have found a small amount of blood in the mucus stuff (sorry for being gross) Has anyone else suffered from this as I’ve asked different nurses and my oncologist and had no direction

Thank you

  • I spoke to Oncologist yesterday, re my forthcoming radiotherapy.  He told me that it can affect a small part of the lung, but nothing to worry about-although it may show up as scarring on any future scans.

I'm a tad worried now. How many sessions of RT did you have? x

  • I had 5 sessions over 5 days, it was absolutely fine and an absolute breeze compared to chemo but it did make me incredibly tired and low energy so be kind to yourself and get lots of rest x

  • Thank you for that info. I'd wanted to defer the RT (5 sessions like you) until after my holls in early September, but the I oncologist didn't think that was a good idea.   Just hope I'm ok for my holls-as already had to cancel one due to surgery.
