Choice of breast surgery

Hi,

I am new to group and have been diagnosed with Breast cancer in my left breast. I have been offered a simple lumpectomy or surgery on both breasts which will be a breast reduction.  Does anyone have any advice?  I am leaning towards the reduction as then will have matching breasts but I guess there is a greater risk from the op.

  • Hi,   I could have had a reduction on my other breast, so that they would be of similar size.  Always being big boobed, I decided to keep hold of  what I had, and possibly use some extra bra padding on the breast with the lumpectomy. I also had a re-excision and a bit more extra tissue was taken out to make sure the margins were well clear

I now do have one breast a bit smaller, maybe a cup and a half size or two. Other people probably won't likely notice, although I do, but the main issue now is that I am about to go back into a normal bra and it's a bit of nightmare getting one to fit.

I've just received a wedge shaped infill from "knitted knockers" but it looks far too much, although it has a small gap to be able to pop more stuffing in, or take some out, so maybe that will solve things.  There are some clear silicone infills available too for about £50 which last about a year, but I'm not sure how they would feel.  It's a  bit pricey if not right-but a bargain if they work.

My surgeon has always reassured me that if I'm not happy with how my breasts look, that I can have corrective surgery on the nhs-but to be honest I wouldn't elect for surgery voluntarily.  I'm sure I shall find a solution.

So, just something to bear in mind when making your decision.

  • Thanks for this Aia - I’m leaning towards the breast reduction on both for many of the reasons you give here.  also have big breasts so can afford to lose a bit. Will see surgeon tomorrow for final discussion but you have helped tremendously thanks xx
