Seroma Seroma

Hi all

I was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Christmas 2024.  I had a lumpectomy on 21 December.  My radiotherapy stated on 17th February 2025.  I was due to have 15 fractions.  I managed 4 fractions until my seroma became infected and liquid burst through my scar leaving a large hole and cavity. Totally gross!  Since then I have been visiting the hospital 2 to 3 times a week to have the wound dressed and packed including a series of 4 pico dressings.  I have returned to surgery to have the scar sutured with a small gap for any fluid to be released. Finally last week after 2 months it looked like I was turning a corner.  The wound was healing well and the cavity caused by the seroma was being filled.  This week I have been changing the dressing myself but small amounts of the yellow fluid seems to have returned and the pin prick size hole from yesterday was slightly bigger this morning in the shower.  I have an appointment to see my surgeon next Saturday to discuss progress.

I am so fed up of it.  I just want to move forward but I cannot until the radiotherapy re-commences and that will not happen until the scar is fully healed.

I am just really looking to see if anyone else has had a very stubborn seroma (and leakage) and what finally resolved it.  Do I just have to be patient or is there a solution that worked for someone else?

  • Hi  , sorry I can’t help as I had a very big haematoma post op but not a seroma. And I was lucky that the haematoma very slowly reabsorbed of its own accord. I was glad that there was a 10 week gap between the op and my radiotherapy as that let it all heal. Just wanted to send a hug and also by replying it will bump your post back up to the top. Hope you get a reply soon from someone who’s had this. Love and hugs, HFxx
