Hi all,

I had mastectomy/DIEP reconstruction 6 weeks ago.

My belly button is not healing (everything else is great) it has slough in it which the nurses don't appear to be concerned about.

Has anyone else had this? How long did it take to heal? What did you do? Dressing etc.

Any help, greatly appreciated, I'm going on holiday in two weeks and hoping it will be healed by then!

  • I had a mastectomy and diep reconstruction on the 4th December. For the most part it healed in 6 weeks but I had a very stubborn part in the middle that just would not heal. They used gel, silver, honey at different times but it would not close. I developed some fat necrosis and then a staph infection that was caught early because I notified my nurse as soon as I realised the amount of liquid I was leaking had increased a lot and turned greenish. I was put on antibiotics and increased my dressings appointments to 2 a week until it cleared.

Once the infection cleared up it seemed to finally heal but it took until the end of January until I could say I was happy with it. Just in time to start radiotherapy. I had my 3 month check last week and they were happy with what it looked like so made an appointment for 3 months time so we can discuss what to do about my missing nipple, to ensure symmetry and to address a couple of areas at the end of my abdominal scar which they call dog ears.

I would check with your nurse as to what they think about your holiday and how to dress it during that time. They have seen many wounds and know what is normal and what isn't way more than we would so if they say it is nothing to worry about I wouldn't.

    Enjoy your holiday.
