Hi everyone I have just been diagnosed with DCIS intermediate and feeling very anxious.

I have been told it’s grade 0 but will need removing but have to have another ultrasound and biopsy in a different location.

  • Hi

Welcome to the group - clearly where you'd not want to be, but it's great that you have found us at the start of everything.

Yes, you're right it is grade 0; because as yet, it hasn't turned into cancer - they are pre-cancerous cells.  So it's good news that they've caught it at such an early stage.  But, yes, they do need to remove them.  I recall reading the brochure when I had my first ever mammogram about DCIS and it said that sometimes it doesn't turn into cancer.  However, during my treatment, I realsied that this was a very basic way of looking at it in the brochure.  The oncologists have a good 'eye' for it.  I had DCIS and a cancer when I went for this first mammogram. I had 2 areas of DCIS (totalling 54mm and a cancer of 15mm). But, I am nearly 8 years later doing very well.  As my cancer was oestrogen positive, I didn't even need chemotherapy, so in comparison to a lot of ladies I found the treatment very manageable.  If you have another area of DCIS when you have your biopsy, then try not to panic.

The ONE thing I realised throughout it all - the FEAR of the treatment was 100% worse that the actual treatment itself.

If there's anything I can give you to hold on is that one line above.  Try and take one day at a time and not worry about the next step.

    Kindest wishes, Lesley
