Hair regrowth!

Hi, first time poster. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of October and have had 4 rounds of EC and 3 of Docetaxel - I have scans next week to see if I need a 4th but looking like I might be done with chemo - everything crossed! I still have surgery and radiotherapy to go but looking forward to this part being over.
I cut my hair off after second round of EC - cold capping didn’t work for me! In the last few days I can feel the start of fuzzy regrowth and I’m just wondering what everyone recommends to encourage regrowth after treatment? (Hair products/supplelments etc). I have started having a look but always good to get advice from anyone going through similar experience. Thanks so much!

  • Hi gems1783,

I also had 4 cycles of EC my last one in September.

I use everyday shampoo and conditioner. My hair is now coming in quite thick, darker than before and about 2cm all over. It feels lovely and soft. Not sure yet if it's going to have the chemo curl.

I'm not sure what others use but I've not done anything out of the ordinary and it's growing in good now. Good luck with the rest of your recovery xx

  • Hi, I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy finished Sept last year, my hair fell out in clumps so I shaved the rest, I use rosemary oil massage it in, then a couple hours later wash out with baby shampoo,  myhair has grown back well, about 4cm with curls, hope all goes well for you x

  • Thank you for replying, that’s great that your hair is growing back so well Relaxed️

  • Thank you for replying. I’d heard rosemary oil was good for hair growth so that’s good to know it’s working well for you Relaxed️

  • Hi

i had 3 EC and 3 docetaxel, last one was on 10 December last year. My hair began to come through before chemo finished. I use Weleda hair restorer with rosemary and faith in nature rosemary shampoo. My hair is still a bit sparse on top but coming through nicely on back and sides. I watched a video by the charity cancer hair and it was very informative.

    • Hi all, daughter used the Weleda hair restorer with rosemary. She felt it helped. She also visited her hairdresser every six weeks while she was at what she called the 'tennis ball' stage - fuzzy regrowth - and had it clipped so that the growth was even all over. Hairdresser said that would thicken it, and it did seem to. Her hair is now about four inches long all over, very thick and a slightly darker shade than it was before.
  • Thank you for replying - I was looking at this so good to know it’s working well for you Relaxed️

  • Thank you for replying and for the recommendation, it’s very helpful Relaxed

  • Hi gems1783

I found losing my hair one of the toughest aspects of my treatment. I finished chemo (EC & paclitaxel) 10 months ago, and my hair regrowth started about a month before it finished.

I read a couple of research articles which found that pure peppermint oil is more effective than the likes of minoxidil (which has to used for life).

I used 20 drops of peppermint oil and 20 of rosemary oil, (you may increase the drops, but I startedd with less) in a small tub of gentle conditioner, but you can also use a carrier oil such as argan oil. It definitely worked for me,  and I now have a full head of thick hair. It's white/grey,  but it's there! I hope this helps.

  • I did a Headwrappers workshop last week and rosemary oil, rosemary shampoo from Faith in Nature and Weleda rosemary hair tonic were all mentioned. Also baby shampoo was thought to be too perfumed although I did use it on my scalp when I was completely bald. If you look at their website they have all sorts of helpful tips and other charities, like Hair Reborn are linked- they do the first 3 haircuts for free. Has to be some benefit to having chemo!
