Biopsy with clip

Hi all, I just joined and hoping to get a bit of insight in to other people's experiences. I was seen in the breast unit last week after noticing that one of my breasts had very slightly changed shape and just felt a little lumpier than the other. (I've always been able to feel quite lumpy milk ducts so couldn't feel anything that particularly stood out.) I had a mammogram and an ultrasound which showed a 1cm lump in that breast (as well as a fluid filled cyst that we can ignore). They did some biopsies on it (about 3) and inserted a small clip to mark the spot in scans. The thing that's throwing me is the clip, is it routine to insert these if they suspect fibroadenoma or is it more for if they think it's sinister and want to see it show up for surgery? I just didn't think to ask any questions really but I guess I'm now feeling like they'd have said if they suspected it was benign but they didn't either way. Has anyone else had similar experiences and how did it all go? I'm pretty practical so I feel like I'd rather know straight up than be reassured that it might be benign.

Thanks for reading :)

  • Hi ,

I recently had a similar experience and lump was a similar size. I also had the biopsy and clip put in ( at this point they were pretty sure it was nothing untoward).

This is just because it’s so small and makes it easier to find on the ultra sound or mammogram in future, whatever it is.
In my case the results approx 6 days later were that it was cancerous. Although this was a shock I also felt reassured that it was found so small and there’s treatment available. Roll on 2 weeks,  I then had a magseed fitted ( similar to the clip , but so the surgeon could go straight to it) then a few days later a lumpectomy.
Waiting for the results is hard and I’m hoping you get the news that it’s benign Fingers crossedbut if not please stay positive in the knowledge that it’s been caught early and there are many treatments available which they get on and do very quickly. Good luck Winkx

  • I had a clip inserted too. The ultrasound doctor said it was to  be able to see easier on mammograms in the future. In fact they were looking for a clip as I had a lumpectomy but it was 30 years ago and they didn't do them then.

  • Wow 30 years ago! I bet your experience was very different than now. Congratulations on your recovery . Due to them looking for it does this mean it’s left in as obviously the magseed comes out in the op ? If so why would that be ? Is it just to know where abouts the affected area was previously ?

  • Hi Bowland

Mammogram showed two tumours in my left breast but only one could be found on ultrasound, they put markers in and then I had to have further mammograms that were more in-depth to make sure they were in the right place.  They did tell me at the time it would take two weeks for the biopsy results and asked if I wanted to know - I was on my own but said yes and was told it looked positive for breast cancer and the biopsies would give the type. Hopefully your are only there for future reference. Xxx

  • Hi Bowland

At the time I was told it was a marker to indicate where they had taken the biopsy and that it would be permanent, but wouldn't affect me.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Bowland

My understanding is that clips are routinely left in after all biopsies so that they always know where they’ve taken the sample from - and it’s not related to any potential outcome of the biopsy. Happy to be corrected if this is not the case.

    Good luck

  • Yes, totally different now. I also only had a lumpectomy last time but had a mastectomy this time as it was the same breast. The clip must be gone now. Good luck with any treatment you need.

    1. I’m so sorry you’ve been through this twice . Must have been so hard to go so long and then appear again and bring it all back. You sound like a strong woman that’s been through a lot.
My next step is seeing if it’s all gone then on to radiotherapy although I’m aware it’s quite common to have to have done again if any left but hoping that’s not the case Fingers crossed
    2. Good luck with your future but sure you will get through whatever’s thrown at you X
  • Thank you. This time I'm unable to have radiotherapy as the cancer was in the same breast as last time. They also decided I didn't need chemo either as the margins from the mastectomy were good. I am just having hormone treatment for a minimum of 5 years,  bringing back hot flushes that I had had for 20 years last time. Small price to pay.

  • Thank you for all the reassuring replies. I had my results today and thankfully he said it was a fibroadenoma so nothing to worry about. He has scheduled me for a repeat scan in 6 weeks which seems a bit strange, does anyone have any suggestions why I'd have another scan on it so soon?
