I found a lump in June and have been diagnosed with what I think they are saying is triple positive breast cancer. I had cancer cells in some lymph notes. In early September I had a lumpectomy and lymph node clearance. My margins were not clear so on 23rd October I had further surgery. I am waiting to hear the result of this but was told I was going to need chemotherapy and hormone treatment which would be followed by radiotherapy. I am 74 and wondering how I will deal with this. My daughters are grown up and I am retired so have no pressure about work. However my husband and help look after grandchildren four days a week.
Hi Portnoo,
I had a lumpectomy some months ago and lymph nodes removed, I finished my radiotherapy recently and have now been told I am clear. I know your circumstances are slightly differently to mine and I’m so sorry you are having to go through this. However, there is still so much you can do for yourself.
You have made the first big step by finding the Macmillan site, also do visit your nearest Macmillan centre, a list is on here, or ring them on 0808 808 0000, they are superbly helpful and give you lots of great info, do walks, talks, help with benefits, bills, open 10-4 Mon-Fri for coffee and chat. I also go for a short walk every day (British weather permitting) and do a daily diary, this is mega helpful, as it gets everything off your chest and out of your system. It is important during the day to keep yourself occupied, hobbies, interests etc., it stops you from dwelling on what is going on. You may also find it beneficial to listen to a meditation podcast, they really help you to relax especially when you are trying to get to sleep. I use one called ‘Go Gently’ by Christine Elizabeth Smith, it does a lot for me. Whatever you do, do not visit Dr Google as there is so much conflicting information, your head will spin and it will stress you out. I think you need to discuss your anxieties with your medical team and ask your breast cancer nurse as many questions as you want. Also, you get great support on here.
RI know it’s hard sometimes, but try and keep as positive as you possibly can, have positive people around you and dump the negativity, above all, be kind to yourself - I promise you, you will get through this. You are NEVER alone and can always come and chat to us shower in here.
Keeping fingers and everything crossed for you.
Take care and big hugs.xxx
Hi Portnoo,
Welcome to the forum.
I had lumpectomy and removal of sentinels. I managed to look after my grandchildren aged 10 and t. I explained that gran was poorly and they could help me which they did.
During my chemo was a bit tougher as I suffered terrible fatigue and was unable to look after them my chemo week. Everyone is different and has different regimes. Some are easier on you than others. Some people manage to work whilst getting chemo.
During the radiotherapy it was easier I didn't have any side effects. That finished last week. I'm now having hormone suppressants and managing them well. I am also getting physically fitter also.
Whilst everyone is different on different treatment regimes. The ages of your grandchildren may be helpful in determining if you can care for them.
Good luck with your treatment plan and recover xxx
