Hi, I got diagnosed recently and am due to have surgery on the 29th followed by chemo, radiotherapy and then hormone therapy. The exact details of my treatment plan are still yet to be decided as waiting on yet more test results (I was meant to have had my surgery on the 5th but it got pushed back until the 29th as a CT Scan showed other areas of concern so needed further investigation). Anyway, my main reason for reaching out is about the chemo. I have been told I will definitely lose my hair during the chemo. I was going to leave my hair as it is now (long) until it starts to fall out and then have it shaved off BUT people are telling me I should perhaps have it cut short now so I can get used to not having long hair. I guess I don't want it cut so that if by some miracle I don't lose my hair I haven't cut it unnecessarily (I know this is wishful thinking). I was wondering what people do? Also, the cancer nurse briefly mentioned a cool cap to help reduce the hair loss and I wondered what people's experiences of these were? My main concern is that my 11 year old son is particularly struggling with the thought of me losing my hair so I'm thinking if it's going to fall out anyway then what's the point in giving him false hope it won't. Don't know if any of my ramblings make sense. Feeling very alone and that people are trying to push me into things I don't want. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks x

  • I have recently had a cancer diagnosis. I decided to have my hair cut short in the same week so that I can get used to it, I’m so glad that I did.  My youngest son has autism, I thought he would struggle, but he’s been amazing.

  • Hi, thanks for commenting. I have twin boys (11 years old) - one is acting like nothing happening (his way of coping) but my other son is really struggling, he has autism also. It's hard knowing what to do for the best. I'm trying to keep them included, they've both bought me a hat for when my hair falls out (I'm not meant to know as it's for Xmas).

  • Awwwww that’s sweet that they have brought you a hat.  I think for me the biggest thing will be having no hair at all, but I’m determined to get a nice wig with a funky hairstyle Joy.   I was advised that loosing all of my hair, eyelashes and eyebrows will be inevitable.  I’m having chemo, then surgery and then more chemo.  My family are struggling more than I am with the diagnosis

  • My main lump is large (you can easily see it) so the Consultant told me the priority was to get it out before starting the other treatments. I always used to have short hair but for the past 8 years or so it's been long. Maybe I'll have another think about cutting it, perhaps get my boys involved (I've already decided they can shave my head if they want when the time comes and my son has said he wants his head shaved too). Good luck with your treatment and I bet you'll rock your funky new hair style Slight smile

  • Hi Vicman31, I had long hair when I started chemo and I used the cold cap throughout all 8 cycles of chemo. By my second chemo my hair started to fall out. I did go fairly bald a bit like Gollum. I didn’t cut or shave my hair off. When I finished my EC chemo I found I had lost about 80% of my hair but it started to grow back on Docetaxel. At the end of my chemo I did cut of the odd really long bits just so it all matched in length. Before I started chemo I got a wig. It made things easier as the lady who helped me get one organised was able to see my style length and colour so we could get something to match as close as possible. I also got myself some beanie hats and scarves. Not everyone looses all their hair some people are lucky and manage to keep a fair bit. Unfortunately one can’t tell in advance who will or won’t loose any. Children all cope in their own ways. My 2 boys coped well despite eldest going through GCSE’s and the youngest getting over being run over by a car. We also kept them informed every step of the way and never hid anything from them. It’s very sweet your boys have bought you a hat .
    Wishing you all the best.
