After surgery.

  • Hi i am not sure what you are having done is it a mastectomy or  lumpectomy. I had a mastectomy and did not experiance much pain at all. It was a little bit tight for a few days but no real pain that a co co codemol  could not take away. I worried and thought it would really hurt but to be honest it was much better than expected

  • Hi,

I had a mastectomy and lymph node clearance, without reconstruction. I had a bit of pain shortly after waking up, quickly managed by the recovery nurse. I was offered a paravertable block to help and after a few of days of regular paracetamol and dihydrocodeine, I was on paracetamol only. Surprisingly, it really wasn't too bad considering.

I actually feel I have more energy now than before surgery, but that might also be something to do with 6 weeks off work, not just getting rid of the cancer.

I can't comment on lumpectomy or any reconstructive surgery.

  • I had a mx with lymph node clearance- I was ok with the pain and only used paracetamol- the only time it was uncomfortable was when I had a seroma and a slight skin infection which cleared up just before my chemo. Was off sick for 6 weeks but got more exercise when I wasn’t tired and also managed to get away before the next stage x

  • Hi

I had a lumpextomy but was deep inside the breast. Also the sentinel lymph node removed which ended up starting in my neck. This was really painful for me after surgery and was very difficult to move for the first few days. The pain did ease after a few days but continued to be painful for over a year. They explained to me, the went through the nipple and basically had to seperate my boob to where the lump was so it had a lot of knitting back together. The exercises were really important due to the lymph node position so would recommend that you follow the exercises. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly for you xx

  • Thank you very much. They are going to remove my sentinel nodes as well.  Did they tell you that they were going to remove them from the neck? Xx

  • Thank you very much xxx

  • Hi I'm having a flap done and mammoplasty also they are going to do sentinel nodes. I hate pain. Thankyou x

  • I had a lumpectomy done last year and had very little pain post operative. I stayed in overnight as a precaution and just had paracetamol. I was home the next day and back at work reduced hours the following week

  • Hiya

Would recommend that you start the physio exercises before surgery if possible and as soon as you are able after surgery.  I had lumpectomy plus lymph node removal and the pain was managed by paracetamol and ibuprofen, no problem.  Slept a lot too!  Had surgery in February, then chemo, then radiotherapy and am now getting pains in the boobs and underarm.  Much better if I keep stretching exercises and do lymph drainage massage (have lymphoedema on the breast).  Again, ibuprofen helps.  It's a long job, this recovery, a full time job too!

Best of luck, here if you need me!  BexF
