Breast cancer diagnosis last week - spread to liver

Hello,

My Auntie was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of weeks ago. She went for a routine check up, did not have a lump or any other underwent surgery to have it removed. We were expecting that she would have to undergo a course of chemotherapy. We were thinking that she had found it early by getting regular check ups however her test results have come back and the cancer has spread to her liver. She has apparently been told that “it is too late for chemotherapy” although has a meeting tomorrow to discuss treatment options.

I am not very across the terminology as it’s my first experience with cancer so I hope that makes sense. I am also learning through second hand info.

I’m hoping that by posting here I can learn more about other people’s experiences and the process so that I can be a better support for her and my family.

Any sharing is very much appreciated. In particular:

  • whether you or someone you love has had breast cancer which spread to the liver and what the treatment involved
  • If you have had cancer, what kind of support was most helpful and welcome (whether having home cooked meals delivered etc).

I have already been reading through blog posts and quite warmed by the community that exists here

xx

  • Hello

I'm sorry you haven't had a reply yet.  I expect it's because most of the ladies on here are usually recently diagnosed and often breast cancer is diagnosed so well due to mammograms that it hasn't spread too far.

I'm sorry to read that your Aunty has had it spread to her liver and that they are not going to give her chemotherapy.

I haven't had this experience as I was diagnosed before mine had even spread to my lymph nodes, so I don't know what treatment would be involved and if it is likely to be life preserving treatment / making her comfortable - and it may well be for years which can often be the case for metastases from breast cancer.

I have a link here for more information from Cancer Research about secondary liver cancer which will give you a bit more information about treatments available.

With regards to what you can do for support, I personally would just ask her what support she thinks she needs. There may be days when she feels absolutely fine and other days that she needs more support.  Just being there and offering her the support will mean the most to her I am sure.

There may be others who can help you with a bit more information now as, by answering, I have bumped your post back to the first page.

    Kindest Wishes, Lesley
