Hi I start chemo soon. Looking for any tips on coping with physical tiredness. Looks like only walking is recommended.
I've just finished my chemo.
My best advice is listen to your body! Only you know how much you are up to doing.
Some days I just wanted to nap on the sofa, other days I was fine to go to a class at the gym.
As long as you treat yourself well, eat properly and rest as needed that's all you can do.
I kept away from alcohol completely, ate lots of chicken, fish, veg and salad.
Drank lots of water.
Naps and baths on tired days.
Most weeks I've been able to get to the gym at least twice, but doing gentler classes.
If it wasn't so cold and wet here I'd be going for a nice walk today.
Good luck.
Hi Summerton.... have to be honest possibly only had one day in two weeks (fortnightly chemo) where I felt over tired and allowed myself to go back to bed. I am usually an active person doing DIY, gardening etc...... I have slowed it down, but would not say I have stopped - I am learning to understand what my body needs and not taken things to far..... So I painted one window each day! I think its important to keep yourself busy so that you are mentally relaxed and prepared. But everyone is different.
Hi Summerton,
I would say it depends on your level of fitness going into chemo and then how your body copes with the treatment. I stuck to walking during 4 x EC fortnightly cycles, but I had more energy during my 4 x Paclitaxel cycles (also fortnightly) so started jogging again after getting the ok from my oncologist. She told me to listen to my body and not overdo it, so I started slowly, running for 2 mins then walking for 1 min on repeat for as long as I could manage and building my distance up over time. I also joined a JogScotland group for cancer survivors who are simply the best support group I could have wished for and I’ve made lifelong friends. Good luck with the chemo, drink loads of water and take a nap whenever your body tells you it needs some downtime!
Hi. We all find it different. I had the odd day when I was really tired and also as the weeks went on I slowed down lots. But I recovered after chemo finished within about a month. I’m not sure walking only is recommended. Check with your oncologist if you can continue normal exercise etc if you are feeling well. Good luck. X
