Morning

Having been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer I had a lumpectomy and sential lymph node extraction on 17th August.

the operation was successful although they had to take out more than they thought and there is no spread into the lymph nodes.

i am now 4 weeks post surgery and have an appointment next Tuesday with the oncologist I am assuming to discuss the RT & medication.

Can anyone advise what to do about the constant pain I am feeling, i understand its from the muscles & nerves which have been pulled and pushed about during the procedure but it is now beginning to wear me down. My consultant advised paracetamol & ibuprofen but they dont seem to do very much .

Thanks in advance :-)

  • Hi Struth, sorry you are having pain issues with your lumpectomy. Yes it comes from the muscles and nerves being pulled around and then from what I understand as they start to heal it can cause pain to.

I found wearing a supportive soft bra helped (M&S) I also wore a post surgery bra (Macom) for a while too. These I would wear 24/7 and I continued that for about 6 weeks. I also was given exercises to do to help stop the muscles ceasing up making things more uncomfortable.
As paracetamol and ibuprofen aren’t helping maybe your gp or surgeon would prescribe you something stronger for a while. I did find to start with I had to do pain management regularly to help keep on top of things so I would alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen every 2 hours. Gradually as I felt more confident the pain was easing I would have longer breaks between them until I no longer needed them. This refiner was only for about a week or so before I was able to wean myself off completely.

    Wishing you all the best.

  • Hi Struth,  I’m sorry you are still experiencing pains after your lumpectomy.  As Cuffcake said, ask your doctor for another painkiller to help.  I had my lumpectomy and sentinel node op 5 weeks ago.  I still get twinges in my arm especially in the evenings, but I can manage that with the exercises and paracetamol, I can not take Ibuprofen.  Had to have another lumpectomy yesterday as they did not get clear enough margins, so here we go again….
I wish you well with your ongoing treatments.  Xx

  • thanks Cuffcake. I have been doing the paracetamol and ibuprofen and my exercises.

i think maybe i came back to work a bit too early and its just because I am using it more now.

i am still, despite having the operation, in the 'this isnt happening to me camp' not sure if it will hit me more when i go for RT.

    Thank you for your support.

    xx

  • I think it is more where they took the lymph nodes but its the fact it is constant.

i will speak with my GP

Awwh bless you, fingers and everything else crossed they get a clear margin this time for you Orchid23.

    sending hugs xx

  • Thank you so much Struth.  I am like you still in the ‘this is not happening to me stage’. Thought it would have hit me by now. I’m still waiting to see if I need RT or not.  They are not sure yet.  So will probably hit then.  It’s definitely a roller coaster isn’t it. Xx

  • you are not wrong there, deffo a roller coaster...the hardest bit I find is that we are so much in limbo from one procedure to the next. Hopefully i get more info on Tuesday.

    stay strong xx

  • You too, fingers crossed for Tuesday.  Xx
