Mum's cancer

Hello

Back in January 2022 my 85 year old Mum had a mastectomy. Her tumour was ' Grade 3 IDC/ micropapillary with high grade DCIS.  Invasive and whole size 110mm. 16/24 lymph nodes were affected. ER 2/8 PR 2/8 (guessing these are something to do with hormones?). HER2+VE, NPI 8.2.

I've tried looking this up more than once but it's so confusing. Basically, we were told it was aggressive, but you know when you just want to understand it better than that?

Hoping someone can kind of put it in a nutshell for me.

Anyway fast forward to this week, and she's just had the results of a biopsy done on a 'bruise' type of rash mostly along her scar line. The cancer has returned in her skin.

Obviously, more surgery out of the question and radiotherapy not currently advised, if it were ulcerating or bleeding or lumps developed it would be. Why is this?  Can they only treat when things are clearly developing more or is her age a concern too?

We have no idea what the prognosis could be or what really I expect.

Hoping someone can explain a bit more

Thank you

Jessmina

  • Hi Jessmina welcome to the forum. That sounds like a lot of really complicated information that you have given there and i wonder if it might be better to ask one of the Nurses about all this as they may be able to answer with more information maybe than we can.

I have inserted  a link below which if you click on will take you straight to this and you just cut and paste your question in there and they will get back to you..

    Sending best wishes for now.

    ask a nurse

  • Thank you for your kind thoughts, she's currently doing okay, probably better than the rest of us! She surprises us all the time with her outlook on things. I'm guessing you're on here for a reason too, so sending you love and empathy also. x

  • Yes I was diagnosed n July ti's year.ive Ave me surgery ad clear on me brwast but gone thru nodes n need Ave them all removed which only thin I'm nervous n really scared bout is avin drains ti's time as it also only month since last surgery.i like 2 think I'm a strong person but these drains is made me petrified as dnt know what expect ti's time around. I'm glad u mum doin well still me love goes 2 u all.love 2 u mum xxx

  • Bless you..I think my Mum had 16 lymph nodes removed at the same time as her mastectomy. They had to leave one that has cancer in it under her clavicle as it couldn't be reached. Her drains weren't in very long as not a lot of fluid came out, definitely out by the time she came out of hospital. Was pleased for her, didn't know how she would manage that herself, she's not physically strong. Different for everyone I guess so try not to worry. We always apply the 'I'll worry about that tomorrow' kind of thought, as tomorrow never comes, it's always today! x
