Hi folks . First time of posting. Im trying to gather thoughts on whether its better to have a reconstruction at the same time as a mastectomy or not .I was diagnosed with dcis in February after a nipple excision to investigate a leaky nipple . I have hust had my 3rd opp to achieve clear margins . I will be facing a mastectomy next if clear margins not achieved and trying to be prepared .One day I think one thing and the next another . Any help ?
Hi, sorry to hear you have 3 ops and still no clear margin. I had two ops before clear margins. My sentinel node was clear. The dr said it depends on the size of your breast how many times they operate before a full mastectomy which makes sense. I was told I would have a mastectomy if the margins weren’t clear after the first but he decided I had enough for another 1 cm margin. He also said he wouldn’t do a reconstruction at the same time as radiotherapy can have a negative impact on it. I’ve seen several posts on here where ladies have had to reverse the reconstruction following treatment. I’m sure your surgeon will advise you of the best way forward.
