Does anyone have experience of zoledronic acid infusions? I finished chemo early March and Radio early April and was getting ready to celebrate then was told I need 6 monthly zoledronic acid infusions-first one end of this week and I don’t know what to expect and how I’m likely to feel
I just had my first one so will let you know what side effects happen over the next few days. I will have this every 6 months too. Did they tell you to get your teeth checked first - this is very important as in rare cases it can affect the jaw. I feel ok so far so hoping that lasts :)
Hi, it's a quick procedure, about 20 mins via IV and completely painless. I had flu like symptoms after my first one, lasted about 24 hours, but the 2 after that I've had no symptoms at all. Best wishes
Hi Romy99
i had my tumour removed July 2022 and radiotherapy in September . I did not need chemotherapy as my onconyte test score came back under 20 .
I am on Letrozole for 10 years as my cancer was oestrogen 8/8 . I was also prescribed a daily Ibandronic Acid tablet ( it’s an oral bisphosponate ) . I took this for 4 months but could not tolerate it . Terrible indigestion , nausea etc so the oncologist team agreed to give me 6 monthly Zolendronic acid infusions . Six sessions over 3 years . This was done in the hospital out patient ward . It took about one and a half hours from start to finish ( this is from booking in, preparation for the infusion etc) . The infusion took about 20 minutes. It was fine, hardly any discomfort.
I felt off colour for about 2 days but after that I have been fine. I am almost 4 months after the infusion . Such a difference from the oral medication.
I am sure you will be fine.
I hope this helps . Take care and I wish you the best of luck.
NannaJ xx
Hi I too have Zolendronic Acid infusions annually, had first one in March.....I was fine for the first few days , but then I felt unwell for about a week. Just tired and heavy.... but fine since.
As has been mentioned before you can read about the pros and cons of all the bisphosphonate treatments on the ROS Royal Osteoporosis Society website.
Hi I have had my 1st .. I got flue like symptoms for 5/7 days I had to have my teeth checked before had ( luckily my daughters a dentist) also had to have a blood testa week before . I also have to have it every 6 months .. xx
Hi I had bi annual infusions for three year so 7 treatments . Had dental checks prior as they prefer no invasive dental work as slight risk of jaw problems . I believe if you get a dental problem they time it so 6 weeks away from infusion date .
I lost a filling during treatment but no problem getting it replaced just delayed an infusion by week
