After deciding to have a mastectomy which (after a delay) went ahead last Monday. Everything went ok and I was given a drain which was removed on Thursday.
Apart from getting used to the awful sight of my breast being removed I’ve been ok apart from a sore tight chest, it feels like my lungs aren’t taking in enough air. has anyone else had this? I also wanted to ask when people started wearing their bra again? I’ve got a soft vest top to wear and was given a prosthetic breast.
I’ve got clinic on Wednesday to get the dressing removed and possibly get my results.

Thanks everyone xx

  • Hi cazza25

I had my mastectomy on the 7th Feb so it feels like a long time ago now but I remember the tight feeling on my chest and it felt very bruised to touch. I also felt like I took deeper breaths sometimes but never felt short of breath. I never wore a bra until the 8th day, 2 days before I went to.get my dressing removed,  and then u wore a soft silky, not under wired one I had previously got from Marks and Spencer. Life saver it was, I wore my softie that they had given me in the now empty cup! I wore it for a couple of hours each time as sometimes it did feel like it put pressure on the area but now all the time, I feel lost without it xxx

  • Hi Jenflower, it’s so lovely to hear you’re doing well, thanks for sharing your positivity and experience it’s definitely put my mind at ease. Xx

  • Hi  , hope you’re recovery is going well.
Good luck too for your ongoing journey of treatment x

  • Hi

had my mastectomy March 23rd six weeks on now feeling a lot better although still pulling across the chest but not so bad  I also had my lymph nodes removed so I had pain in that area also,  I was given a bra and softie the day I left hospital which was the day of my surgery and my breast care nurse put it on for me there and then. I find it a bit uncomfortable to wear because of the underarm area where my lymph nodes were removed but I keep it on through the day but take it off in the night. I did get a post prosthetic form from Marks and Spencer which I have found great but bear in mind I am now six week on from operation I am going to my breast clinic to have my prosthetic fitted next week.

    take care x

  • Hi JaneyMl

Im sorry to hear you’ve had to go through a mastectomy but glad to hear you’re healing well. Mastectomy was on 27th March and I’ve healed pretty quickly apart from being a bit sore under my arms like you. I had my bra fitting last week which was early because I’d healed so well. It was a really positive experience, I tried a few different bra styles and prosthetics until I found the perfect one. I got a free bra from nhs and 15% off another. I came out feeling really good so I hope you have a similar experience.

    Big hugs Cazza25
