Hi, I was told yesterday that I have DCIS following a routine mammogram and subsequent investigations & biopsy.
I'm still trying to take it all in - I'm outwardly upbeat and so glad I had the mammogram but I'm terrified of surgery (well specifically being put to sleep).
I've opted for lumpectomy rather than mastectomy but the likely date of surgery could be about 2 weeks before my first holiday abroad in 13 years. My consultant said that if all goes well he doesn't see any reason why I shouldn't still go (with precautions after a GA of taking aspirin and wearing flight socks etc) it's a relaxing beach holiday 7 days in Turkey all inclusive. Am I daft to even consider still going so soon after surgery?
My brain is mush at the moment - I also became a grandmother again the day before my diagnosis and my emotions are all over the place
Oh and hi :)
Hi JoJo67
Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer. No I don’t think you are daft at all to go on holiday about two weeks after your operation particularly as your surgeon thinks there isn’t any reason that you can’t go. An lumpectomy is not as invasive as a mastectomy so it shouldn’t take you too long to recover from it. Also a holiday is a good way to take your mind off things if only for a little while.
Wishing you the best of luck with your operation and enjoy your holiday if you go.
Best wishes

So my dates came through and were originally 3rd April for surgery. Today I had a call saying a cancellation has come up and they can get me in on Friday this week. I have pre-op 3.30 tomorrow and they are also putting a guide wire in tomorrow at 1.30. I thought the guidewires were put in the day of surgery?
All of a sudden its very full on and I'm up and down and all over the place - I have so much to organise- I normally take my 8 year old granddaughter to and from school and recently also helping look after her new born brother (1 week old) as their mum had a c-section and now I have to let them down - everyone depends on me - I'm just so overwhelmed with it all
Hi JoJo67
I can understand you feeling overwhelmed. Hopefully your grandchildren can help distract you a bit from what's happening. You've got a couple of weeks to breathe, and then to sort out what you need to. I'm sure your family will manage, and will just be glad that you had the mammogram and are being seen quickly. I hope all goes well.
I had the guidewire put in the morning of surgery, but I guess it differs from place to place. Query that with the BCN if it would put your mind at rest. They are very helpful and I'm sure have heard most questions many times.
As Daisy53 said, a holiday will probably be a good thing. I went away for a short break about six weeks after a mastectomy and a lumpectomy - only in this country, but with a friend who basically ran around after me for three days!
I hope all goes well for you.
Take care,
Diane.
Just think Friday after surgery you are cancer free. I had wire guided lumpectomy for dcis almost 8 years ago. I was last down to theatre at 3pm back in ward about 5.30 and home 3 hours later. I felt like superwoman the next day and a bit then I was exhausted as it hit me. I was lucky and pain free. If you click on my name you can see my bio . Good luck xx
Hi JoJo67
It's good that you are having your operation a little earlier than planned, it will give you a few extra days of recovery before you head off on holiday. As Zappa said your family will be glad that you are having the operation to get rid of the cancer so no doubt your family will just be happy that you are being treated quickly.
Wishing you the best of luck with your operation on Friday.
Best wishes
