Drains

I was told yesterday that my surgeon will not use drains after my mastectomy as he thinks the body gets rid of the fluids naturally. Has anyone else had it without drains? I'm now worrying it will build up. Just under 2 weeks to go, I'm starting to get nervous now xx

  • Hi musicmumma,

    Hi Musicmumma

I had my mastectomy of right breast on 7th Feb, I didn't have drains and to be honest I was thankful as from previous surgery's, not cancer related, they are not nice when take n out. However, I had fluid collect twice and had this drained and did not feel a thing as the area is numb due to surgery. Your cancer nurses too will be really reassuring.  Good luck with your op, you have got this and will be fine, I promise xxx

  • Oh thankyou so much for the reassurance. It has spread to lymph nodes but not sure how many til surgery. If its not many I may get away with just hormone therapy like Tamoxifen and no chemo or radiotherapy , so I'm keeping fingers xd, but also an open mind xxx

  • Hi Musicmumma

My situation is slightly different, I have not had a mastectomy but I did have a lumpectomy (Licap) on 28/2. I was told I would probably have drains but I didn’t and so far (fingers crossed, touching wood etc Joy) it is all ok. I am actually relieved because it is one less thing to worry about.

Wishing you good luck and positive vibes Heart

  • Don’t worry if you have a drain - mine was in for a week and was removed at the Breast Clinic - totally painless. I think drains for other ops can be more difficult but for breast cancer I am led to believe it is easier.
