Radiotherapy and BD scan

I’m due to start radiotherapy today but also have a bone density scan. I have asked if they can be done on the same day but I’m now really worried about the radiation in one day. Should I cancel the BD scan?

  • You might not feel like it, which one is first? Phone them and see if they can rebook if you feel you need to. If it's NHS they don't always like you cancelling on the day. If you explain you only just got your radiotherapy appts recently it might help them understand.

I have Osteoporosis in my wrists before this, the treatment is vitD and calcium. Calcium in diet can't be absorbed without vit D, in this hemisphere we are all probably not getting enough. It's an easy supplement to buy and take.

Good luck with it, I start my radiotherapy next week. Just want to get it over. Xx

  • Hi  , I had my dexa scan (bone density) in the middle of my radiotherapy, which was 3 weeks rather than one at that time, 4 years ago. I just wanted the dexa scan done as I’d started Anastrozole tablets 5 weeks before. The radiologist was very reassuring, saying that the dexa scan is low radiation, I think she said a tenth of a normal x Ray. So not adding much to the radiotherapy dose which I’d probably rather not think about as it will have to be high to do its job! She stayed in the room throughout which surprised me, but said that’s because the exposure is so low.
Good luck with it all, love and hugs, HFxx

  • Agree with what  says, I’ve had several BD scans as I have RA too, it’s very low dose and the operative doesn’t use any protection, save yourself the extra hospital trip xx not that we’re medically trained obviously! X
