Hello

I have just been diagnosed with DCIS in my right breast and have the options of lumpectomy with radiotherapy or mastectomy with reconstruction for treatment.

I would be interested in hearing from others with similar experiences.

My diagnosis came after I was invited for yearly mammograms after my sister was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer.

Sadly she passed away 3 weeks ago (the same day I had my biopsy) so everything seems so raw at the moment.

I'm looking forward to hearing from others and meeting new people on here.

  • Hello TTfan,

Firstly,  so sorry to hear about the loss of your sister.

I too was diagnosed with DCIS in my right breast and had surgery in December . The surgery went well and I was also give constructive surgery on the left breast. Unfortunately,  the results from my biopsy were not good as the margins were too tight to get all non evasive cells out. Therfore,  on the next stage of deciding which option to take another reconstruction or a mastectomy?

I'm not sure how best to advice you as I'm at the early stages too and still exploring and learning everyday.

My experience of this platform has been so positive so far. So reach out and continue to ask questions and call up to speak to an advisor which is what I did today. She was so patient and listened. This is not going to be a straight path but will have some curvy paths.

I'm so sorry that I wasn't able to help with more information but stay strong and positive Heartbeat

  • Hi TTfan, sorry to hear of your diagnosis and also the loss of your sister. What a very difficult time this is for you. Sending you lots of love and hugs.
I had IDC and my first op was a lumpectomy which went well and I had clear margins. Due to a sentinel node being positive I also had to have lymph node clearance of which there were 9 more positive nodes. With the lumpectomy my breast shape has hardly changed and I’m very happy with the look. I’m sorry I can’t comment on radiotherapy (it’s on my treatment plan but I’m having to have chemo first) or a mastectomy there will be others who can give you their experiences.
Waiting for results will be the hardest part and during that time it’s best to keep as busy as you can to take your mind off things. Once a plan is in place it makes things much easier.
Again so sorry for your loss.

Wishing you all the best on your journey.

  • Hello TT Fan, I'm so sorry for your loss and the double whammy with your diagnosis. I also had IDC in my right breast and had a bilateral operation which went very well at the end of July.

I then had to wait for my scars to heal and 12 weeks after I had a week of radiotherapy. I am very happy with where I am now but I did not have to make the decision regarding having a mastectomy.

It is good that you're reaching out at this stage for support and advice, I only came here after my procedure so went into it a little blind.

Wishing you all the best on the start of your journey.

    Gentle hugs from Jackinthebox
