Hello everyone,
I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy two weeks ago on my right breast. Initially they had found an 8mm DCIS and 14mm IDC. Yesterday I saw the breast surgeon for my results, he said that I had five lymph nodes removed and the result was negative phew!! So relieved, but then he went on to say that the IDC was 15mm when removed with clear margins, which was great, but the DCIS removed was 25mm and that I need further surgery to remove another area of DCIS. This is being done on the 5th January, I couldn’t take it all in He done his best to explain it and drew diagrams etc…. Everything just seemed to go over the top of my head. My husband was with with me, he just looked stunned and couldn’t understand either.
I did my best to ask questions and in the end just baffled myself. There was good news, no spread to lymph nodes, HER2 negative, but ostrogen positive. I do have an infection in the area where the lymph nodes were removed and am on antibiotics. If it doesn’t clear it will need to be drained.
I know I will need radiotherapy and await the results of the Oncotype to determine whether I will need chemo.
I know it’s one day at a time, but I thought that the lumpectomy would be the end of surgery and now I need more. And I’m just stunned that the DCIS is so much bigger than the IDC, any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Its really common for DCIS to be more extensive than showed up on scan. Within that a small cancer can develop, which is why you had IDC too. I am sorry that you need to have more surgery, but hopefully this will clear up everything for you and you can then move on to your radiotherapy and hormone treatment. I hope you make a speedy recovery x
Thank you for your reply. It helps to know that, just a little shocked when the surgeon said I would need further op xx
