I was diagnosed with breast cancer in may 2022, had a lumpectomy in June and because non of my lymph nodes were infected and it had not spread, I will only be receiving radiotherapy 18 sessions, and been given tamoxifen to take for the next 5 years.
is there any other way I can take care with out having radiation ?
im concerned about the secondary effects that this may have and other types of cancer that can develop because of this treatment .
Hi Jes
Sorry you're going through this blasted disease. I had lumprctomy in 2007 but as my sentinel node had cancer cells I had chemo and 25 radiotherapy sessions. I did get a bit of a radiation burn under my breast but I had larger breasts then. The only other side affect I had was a tiredness.
I've sadly have a metatastic diagnoses after 14 years clear but not at the initial breast site. It's in the liver and spine, which I'm led to believe is fairly common. Many many people don't develop mets and tbh in my humble opinion I wouldn't worry too much about the radiation. I got 14 clear years. It's totally up to you of course but I would speak to your oncologist and /or breast care team and arm yourself with information both for and against before making your decision. Good luck!
Sandra
