Hi,

I had my single mastectomy 8 weeks on Monday.   My pain around my scar area seems to be getting worse, I've started my physio last week, but has not improved so far.  I'm suffering with cording under the armpit and across my chest.   Has anyone else suffered for this long after surgery. I also feel exhausted every day, is this also normal?

I'm very lucky as had my results and I'm now cancer free which is great, so I don't know why i don't feel ecstatic about the results.  I know i should be feeling very lucky as the outcome could have been a lot worse, but I feel very down about the whole experience and hate my new appearance.

I've got to wait for my Hereditary results to see if I have the Brca 2 gene as I'm the 12th person in the family to have breast cancer.  So I will then have to decide if to have the other one removed. So don't feel like I can get on with my life positively until then.

Is this all normal?

Looking forward to anyone views and replies.

  • Hi Mandy Jane

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have a mastectomy.  It's perfectly normal to be struggling after all you have been through a terrible ordeal and it takes time for the body to adjust to trauma.  However I would ring my medical team if I were you and tell them that you are having a lot of pain around your scar area and they may be able to prescribe something for the pain.

It's perfectly normal for you not to feel ecstatic about your results particularly as you are waiting on results to see for you have the BRCA 2 gene.  Waiting for results to come though is hard.  There is a BRCA Positive forum for patients who either have the BRCA 1 or 2 gene or might have the BRCA gene which you can join to get help and support from those who have either the BRCA 1 or 2 gene.  Here's the link:  BRCA positive forum.

Wishing you the best of luck with your results.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to reply Daisy53.  I will callmy breast nurse to see if they suggest anything for the pain, I was just wondering if it was normal to have the pain for so long and seems to be getting worse?

    Kindest regards

    Mandy

  • Hi. I’m 15 months on from mastectomy and lymph clearance. I have a tight chest that goes from armpit and across scar. I sometimes get cramp in my chest. I’ve had OT that helped release the scar tissue but I find when I use that arm (I swim) it tightens my chest. I’m hoping it will calm down at some point. Xx
