Newly diagnosed dcis

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed yesterday with high grade dcis. I’ve to go for a second biopsy tomorrow and then form a treatment plan. Has anyone had the choice of mastectomy versus lumpectomy? I’m leaning towards mastectomy. I’m only 37 and I don’t want any chance of reoccurrence. I’m in such a panic as I’m currently on maternity leave and my baby is only 5 months old. I know a mastectomy is major surgery so I’m very upset right now. I just can’t seem to get it to sink in!

  • The way my daughter explained to me (she did bio medical degree) is that cancer is just cell changes. Cells normally make copies in a controlled way but sometimes a cell becomes over active and grows out of control and depending on the type of cells /growth they can spread.  DCIS is thought to be early cancer and they grade it by how active the cells are in dividing.  The faster they dividing the higher the grade.  So basically just signal errors.

  • Thanks , it makes sense, I just don't understand why so many cells all simultaneously do it at once!

I've managed to speak to my consultants secretary today and they've brought forward my appointment from next Tuesday, to this Thursday. I don't know why, hopefully for good and not bad reasons! I've got one lymph node biopsy result outstanding, and still need to set a date for surgery. So hopefully she's just brought it forward as she had an earlier slot, and not because of the biopsy results showing anything. Fingers crossed!

  • Hi everyone! Me again!

    Good news, lymph nodes clear!

Surprising news... they've decided to go ahead with the 'cancelled' surgery date of this Monday 17th! So today was a whirlwind of appointment with surgeon then straight to pre op appointment!

I didnt get my week off work to prepare and I feel totally disorganised! But it's less time to worry I guess!

I'm going for LD flap, no implants. Wish me luck! xx

  • Hi  that’s great news about your clear lymph nodes.

Maybe it’s better to just get surgery over and done with, it’s horrible waiting.

And at least you’ll have reconstruction at the same time.

Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery. xx

  • Good luck for the surgery . You’ve got this. Sometime I think this is the best kind of news- it’s been brought forward so less time to wait and worry.

  • Hi Everyone,

Sorry I'm having trouble keeping up and replying.

that's great news about the surgery date! I'll be thinking of you tomorrow.

I've been pencilled in for the 2nd, so only a couple of weeks to go and I reckon it'll come round really quick.

So I did a thing... It's recently been my birthday and Facebook asked me if I wanted to do a birthday fundraiser, I was a bit unsure but decided to go for it. I put it out there of my DCIS and set the target of £200 which was the default. Anyway, people have been really generous and we've gone over £1,000 to the prevent breast cancer charity!

Sending lots of love to everyone. Xx

  • Thinking of you  today. Hope the op has gone well and you’re resting back on the ward now. The pre op time is tough psychologically but post op is the tough physical time. Hope you’re being well looked after, healing time begins..

that is an amazing amount to raise, great work! Hope you get some time and space to prepare for your op too.

    Take care everyone xx

  • congrats on the surgery date and the amazing fundraising! Brilliant achievement.

I have had my surgery yesterday, the whole thing was such a whirlwind! I was just sitting in my clothes, no idea where or when I'd be going into surgery, my surgeon arrived at 8.50 looked at me and said 'you're not ready for theatre, you're first on the list'. Very quickly I got dressed in my robe, was straight on the bed and down to theatre, I barely had time to message anyone to tell them! By 9.05 I was getting my anaesthetic.

I don't know quite what happened as I was told it would be 3 hours, but i wasn't out of surgery until 4! I didn't react great to the anaesthetic or the morphine and I had awful nausea, heart palpitations and hot flushes. It took all evening to stop and I refused to use the morphine again. Not a big fan of that! I must have had painkillers lingering from surgery though as the nurse and my husband tell me I was very spaced out and seeming drunk!

I've been on paracetamol since (via IV) and I'm feeling much better this morning. Tired, but not sick now. Pain is not as bad as I imagined! Although I haven't got out of bed yet as I still have my catheter in, hoping they will come and take it out this morning and I can stand up (and find some pants, as I dont seem to have any on!).

I've got to stay another night, but I'm quite happy to do that anyway. Maybe home tomorrow xx

  • Good to hear from you DasisyB. Have you been able to come home today? How are you feeling?

I was told I'll have to have blood thinning injection for 28 days following my surgery that I'll have to administer myself. Has/was anyone else told this? Those that have had surgery, what kind of clothes did you wear in the weeks following?

    Any freezable batch cooking suggestions?
