Why is the admin such chaos?

I'm new here, having been diagnosed on 24th May during a routine mammogram. I have held it together until today, despite added stresses caused by letter being sent to me on  the wrong template, making an appointment for the wrong thing, having to constantly try to chase up appointments I had been told I needed on certain dates, and having my surgery postponed 20 minutes before it was due to start and then spending a very stressful 5 hours on my own in a ward waiting and very hungry - I get that these things happen

I was told after surgery that my follow up would be on 28/7 and this was also on my discharge notes. No appointment arrived, so I chased that up too, to be told that the appointment for the wrong thing on the wrong template sent before my operation was in fact my follow up time on 01/08. I took a very deep breath and told myself I could wait out another stressful 4 nights -scar site is painful and swollen and stops me sleeping. This afternoon though, I totally lost it when I had yet another call to say the consultant was not available next week and I should now come in on 08/08.

Feel like just giving up at this point. I wasn't ill before and now I feel like rubbish most of the time - and certainly of no consequence whatsoever to the people making these decisions. Sorry for the rant, my poor husband has already had it in spades!

  • This is awful.  Do you have a BC nurse allocated to you yet?  I did and she was fantastic and acted as my advocate for any issues.  When in Y3 I was recalled and they were faffing to find appointment etc. I rang her and she had me seen promptly.  If your scar is swollen and painful ask her to check or it or go to GP.

  • Thank you for the reply -it's nice to know I'm not alone. I forgot to add above that the hospital admin also sat on my HER2 results for 3 agonising weeks before posting them to myself and my GP. I do have a Breast Cancer nurse, but my experience so far has been that they refer me to the GP surgery, who then refer me back to the Breast Care nurses. At the moment I don't feel up to doing battle with the GP system or travelling a 30 mile round trip to ask one of the nurses to look at it.

  • You going to have to turn on water works to GP to get them to act.  If you have a patients complaint system, look on your HA website then they will help you get timely information xx

Also lovely group of ladies here on AWAKE thread .  Just got to last post and say hi!!  It's a chat thread where people pop in and out, old and new.  New members are important to keep the thread going.  It's been running about 5  years so a lot of posts on there you'll never catch up with.

  • Update: after my meltdown, I emailed the Breast Cancer nurses with chapter and verse. A lovely nurse phoned me next morning and arranged for a different consultant to call me the same day with my results - which were good - clear margins and lymph nodes. She says what has happened to me is unusual and it's rare for appointments to be cancelled, let alone so many times. Still a bit sore, but it's amazing what a difference it can make when someone sympathetic tries to help!
