  • I will be having radiotherapy once recovered from lumpectomy. What moisturizer is best to use on my breast as I understand can get very sore and raw with Radiotherapy.   Any advice and preparations I should be making and things to consider, expect would be so helpful. Thank you.
  • Hi Lucky Lass.

Hi had a lumpectomy and 8 lymph nodes removed on 20th April and start my 5 sessions of radiotherapy on 27th July. I dont know what people recommend but I went to local pharmacy and asked for recommendations. They recommended diprobase cream. It has no aroma and is not greasy. My only complaint was the price albeit a largish bottle for £14.99. Then again if it does the trick I wont complain. Will be interested to see what others recommend. Good luck on your journey. x

  • I was told aveeno or e45 but don't put anything on before rads as you don't want anything at all on your skin for the treatment itself.

Interestingly, I was told no emollients like diprobase.

Moisturisers won't stop you having a reaction to the rads, there's nothing you can do about that (& most people do not have a severe reaction, only mild reddening etc). But it is good for keeping the area from drying out and therefore becoming itchy.

Your skin won't heal for 6 weeks so nice to keep it moisturised while it does. I think I used aveeno for a good 2 or 3 months.

  • Hi Devon

Thank you for your reply. I shall look into this and best of luck with your healing journey. x

  • Many thanks for this advice, really helpful. I'll look at the products you mention.

  • I started Radiotherapy on 20th July, I had 5 normal sessions and 5 boost sessions, finished in 1st July.

I have been using Aveeno cream, I haven't really had any issues,  I was able to see the "square" of redness that appears after a few days, I'm not one for sitting in the sun & they advised me this will be a bit more prominent.  My boob has been a little sensitive especially around the nipple area, itchy despite the cream and swollen compared to the other, but that is normal.

Good luck with your treatment and to everyone else going through this.

    Sazzy xx

  • Thank you Sazzy. This sounds really reassuring and although I know we're all different it's good to know. Thank you for your help and best wishes. All good wishes to you too.

    1. Hi Lucky Lass I am in tge same position as you , just had lumpectomy last week and been told radio next so interesting to see yiu reply. I was originally told no oil based creams just water based.
  • Hi Fly

Hope you're recuperating ok. Not too sure when my radiotherapy starts mid August possibly, just wanted to be prepared!  Shall get some Aveeno in I think. I know it's difficult as everyone is different.

Best of luck with your treatment.

  • Think I will be end of August, apparently tky they have 3 months feom op date to do radiotherapy but like to give you time to heal. Had a wee infection so that has slowed me down a bit but getting there. All the best for your next stage and hope all goes well for you too
