I had a lumpectomy on 15th June, got my results last Thursday and margins clear and lymph nodes clear so all good news. I am waiting for an oncology appointment as I will need radiotherapy and I will need to go on hormone medication for 5 years. I am due to go back to work on Thursday but I feel so tired and really emotional this week.I feel like I should be ready to go back to work as it will be 3 weeks tomorrow since my op but I have no energy. Is this normal?

  • It’s absolutely normal. It takes a while to get over the anaesthetic and the trauma of it all.

If you feel you want to go back to work whilst waiting for your radiotherapy ask for reduced hours and/or a phased return so you can pace yourself.

If you feel like you have no energy give it another week. Try and get a little gently exercise even if it’s only a walk round the block as you will feel more energised.

    Take care x

  • Thanks for your reply I am usually so active it’s not like me at all. I think I have been that focused on having operation and getting results I haven’t really processed everything. I am doing my breast exercises  and  will start going for a walk like you suggested I usually walk a lot. I am worried about radiotherapy and hormone medication,it’s like everything it’s the fear of the unknown.

  • I think that is normal, and you may need to allow yourself a little more time for recovery than just 3 weeks, esp if you are feeling exhausted. The radiotherapy takes about 6-8 weeks to recover from too. Be kind to yourself - even if caught early, it is still a huge shock to the system to be diagnosed with breast cancer xx

  • Thank you. I have just got a sick note for another week so hopefully I will have a bit more energy in another week. I have been so lucky it got picked up early on my 1st ever mammogram but still a big shock.
