I have breast cancer and I am having  right side mastectomy booked on the 8th July but I am terrified also I have a drain in after does any one know how long that stays in after

  • Hi Isabela, well done for finding the best place for support and advie on BC, sorry no one has replied to you, I had a lumpectomy and my drain stayed in for 4 days but it is probably different for a mastectomy, hopefully this reply shoul get you bumped up to the top where you will hopefully get a more relevant answer.  Love from Ann

  • Thanks

    Hi

Sorry you got missed it’s such a busy thread !  I had right side MX on July 4th 2019 . My story is on profile just click on my name to read if you wish .

We all react differently but for me my imagination made it far worse than the reality . My BC was correct when she said more discomfort than pain .This is because most hospitals use a nerve blocker to help

My advice would be take the painkillers when offered prevention is better than cure . Do the exercises it’s amazing how quickly you can get the arm movement back .
With regards the drain it can differ mine was in fromThursday til the Tuesday . At my hospital you are given a heart shape cushion for under arm when sitting also a shoulder bag to carry drain .
Remember to take button thru clothing and nightwear so you can get them on and off . A support V pillow is invaluable for comfort in bed .
Please try not to worry too much I found cleaning cupboards and cooking  meals to freeze was a good distraction but anything that works for you .

This is the worst time the waiting once things are happening it gets easier honest ,just concentrate on one thing at a time
