Hi I have just been given two choices for my 44m lump to be removed and also all my lymph nodes to be removed in my armpit.

I am so confused, I have been give the choice of a lumpectomy plus flap type reconstruct with radiotherapy. Or a full mastectomy. I have been reading the pros and cons of both and I just want the best outcome for the cancer to be removed with the smallest percentage chance of it returning. I get that no one can predict this, I just need a little advice on whether to just have the mastectomy as drastic as it is to help easy my worry of the cancer returning.

Thankyou in advance for any advice given xx

  • Hi

It is a very personal choice and only you know whats best and most comfortable to deal with

I found writing down pro's and cons helped me and talking  it through with my BC nurse

I had around the same size tumor removed back in January but only 5 nodes by mastectomy ,my choice down to me not wanting to have to go back in if margins were not clear

I was given the choice I can go back in 12 months for reconstruction after all my treatment plan is finished

mine was sent for onco type test and came back at 28 this changed my original plan to  having chemo , radio after then on hormone tablets for 5 years

    Take Care

  • Reading the pros and cons is a good preparation for making such a decision; what is left to do is view them against your own personal priorities, and the long term impact of each option, as you see yourself.

If you feel that opting for a lumpctomy may leave you with heightened concerns, that would point towards going with a mastectomy. If, on the other hand, the idea of the losing the entire breast is impacting very negatively, that might point in the other direction. As stubborn said, writing it all down can help.
